Why Your Competitor Outranks You on Google Maps (and What to Do About It)

It’s one of the most frustrating things in the trades: the shop down the road does average work, and they sit above you on Google Maps taking calls that should be yours.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Google doesn’t rank the better contractor. It ranks the better Google profile. The good news is that a Google profile is fixable in a way reputation-by-word-of-mouth never was.

The three things Google actually weighs

Google has publicly said local rankings come down to three factors:

1. Relevance: does your profile say what you do?

If your Google Business Profile lists one category, has three photos from 2019, and a description you wrote in five minutes, Google is guessing at what you do. Guessing profiles lose to specific ones. Every service you offer should be reflected in your categories, your services list, and the content on your profile.

2. Distance: where the searcher is standing

You can’t change where your customers search from. What you can change is whether Google clearly understands your service area, and whether your website backs it up.

3. Prominence: does the internet vouch for you?

This is where most trades businesses lose, and it’s the one you can move the most:

  • Review count and recency. A profile with 200 recent reviews beats one with 15 old ones, almost every time. This is the single biggest lever most contractors are ignoring. (Start here: how to get more reviews without begging.)
  • Profile activity. Google favours profiles that look alive: regular posts, new photos, answered questions, responses to reviews. A dead profile reads as a business that might be too.
  • Citations and links. Mentions of your business name, address, and phone number across the web confirm you’re real and established.

The activity gap

Here’s what’s usually true when a worse contractor outranks a better one: the worse contractor’s profile is active. New reviews landing every week. Posts going up. Photos being added. Reviews getting responses.

Google reads activity as relevance. The better contractor doesn’t win on Google Maps. The more active one does.

What to do this month

  1. Fix the basics once. Correct categories, complete services list, accurate hours, real description, service area set properly.
  2. Get your review engine running. Steady, real reviews from actual customers, every week, not a once-a-year push.
  3. Post to your profile regularly. Job photos, before/afters, short updates. It doesn’t need to be clever. It needs to be consistent.
  4. Respond to every review. It’s activity, it’s trust, and it’s visible to every future customer reading them.

None of this is complicated. It’s just relentless, and that’s exactly why most contractors don’t do it, and why the ones who do take the top of the map.

If you’d rather be on a roof than running a Google profile, that’s the entire point of our Local SEO service: we do all of the above for you, month after month, and pair it with the review engine that feeds it. See real results here.
